Biography

Katarzyna Stankowska is one of the leading Polish jazz vocalists. She was born in Wrocław in a family of devoted music lovers. She started singing jazz and improvising while still at high school. In 2008 she completed jazz studies at the Piano Department at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław.

Kasia sings scat and treats her voice as an instrument. At the same time she shows an incredible sense of harmony and excellent improvisation skills. She particularly enjoys performing her own arrangements of jazz standards. Her talent, jazz feeling and constantly improved skills combined with her charm always win the audience. A relatively small number of jazz vocalists proves that singing jazz is not easy.

Katarzyna Stankowska was awarded the first prize at the Jazz Vocalist Competition in Zamość in 2011 – one of the most prestigious events organized in Europe. She also received an individual award at the Jazz nad Odrą Festival in 2000 for the most interesting interpretation of a song about Wrocław. She represented Lower Silesia at the International Exhibition EXPO 2000 in Hanover. She has given concerts in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Kasia also performs as a soloist in Aleksander Mazur’s Big Band. Her growing popularity is indicated by her top positions in annual JAZZ FORUM rankings.

Kasia usually performs with her quartet consisting of Łukasz Perek (piano, trombone and arrangements), Jakub Olejnik (double bass) and Przemysław Jarosz (drums). The vocalist herself also gives jazz piano performances.

At her concerts Kasia performs both the middle-of-the-road jazz music and her own compositions sung in Polish. An example of the latter is the second album of the vocalist and her quartet ‘Nie ma szczęścia bez miłości’ released in January 2013. The album features a guest performance by an outstanding saxophone player Maciej Sikała. The album presenting Władysław Szpilman’s songs in soul-stirring jazz arrangements became widely appreciated in Berlin and in Polish Institutes in Paris, Sofia and London. Currently the musicians are promoting the new album.

In August 2013 the artist, accompanied by excellent musicians and dancers, recorded a video clip for her song ‘Powiedz tak’. At present she is working on her next album.

The vocalist also serves as a juror for competitions, festivals and workshops, for example, ‘Idea-Obraz-Technika’ in Rzeszów: www.pianoart.republika.pl.
